In 1 Peter 5:1-4 the three Greek terms for the office of Elder are combined to give a comprehensive definition of his role. The first responsibility is to shepherd, which is the primary imperative to all elders. As a formal visible expression of of this principle, at Craigmore Christian Church, the Elders meet for an hour, fortnightly on Monday nights where they share a meal together over which they catch up on any urgent business before going visiting among the congregation. We do not appoint elders who seek to take up only the "oversight" aspect of eldership, as "administrative" leaders only, without being shepherds among the people. (See Mk 10:35-45) In eldership the principle of mutual submission in Ep 5:21-- to be willing to submit to and respect each others convictions-- is most important. This does not mean there are not differences of opinion. which are sometimes argued quite vehemently. But it does however mean that the only basis for resolution of contentious issues is unanimity. Honouring this principle takes time and can appear to frustrate decision making, but it underpins a very powerful unity in the leadership. At Craigmore, this principle of mutual submission is expressed systematically.when each of the elders in turn submit themselves to each other for an assessment. Elders tenure is reviewed every three years, and re-affirmed in consultation with the congregation. |

In the early church it is significant to note that while those who had the responsibility for teaching were usually paid for their ministry, and esteemed with a special respect, they never-the-less were not regarded as a different class. They were all essentially still elders. There was not a distinct clergy, with a separate office. At Craigmore, we financially support various shepherds. We call them as "Pastors", as is the custom in the wider Christian community, though biblically speaking, the term could equally well be applied all our elders. In accordance with 1 Timothy 5:17,18, our "Senior Pastor" is a leading elder, who oversees the preaching and teaching of the Word, and gives leadership to the pastoral team. Elders in the early church were appointed directly by existing elders. From Acts 14:23, 1 Tim 3:1-7 & Tit 1:5-9 we see this appointment was not by a democratic process, but it was an executive appointment, made in the local context and was not subject to endorsement from the apostles, or any other remote central authorizing structure. At Craigmore we apply the qualifications listed in these passages carefully. We identify those men who are already effective shepherds. From 1 Cor 4:15 & 1 Thess 2:7-12, we seek as elders men who have a proven track record as spiritual parents, who have led people to Christ and established them in the church. As we sense a confirmation of their calling their names are brought to the people for prayer and comment. After some weeks, if the response is supportive they are appointed publicly. At Craigmore we are grateful to God for His provision and protection of our leaders, and in obedience to 1 Thess 5:12,13 & Heb 13:7,17, we pledge ourselves to their support and encouragement. |
